Did Maslow Know Something About Spiritual Path?
It seems to me that in order embark on a spiritual journey and initiate change in one’s life, certain fear’s must be abated.  At the bottom of the pyramid lie the basic necessities of life (physiological needs).  If any of these needs are challenged, we grow anxious and our instinct for survival sets in.  Spiritual change might occur here, however fear may be the motivating factor.  One might accept “god” or other religious structure to quash the fear.  This is an illusion and should not be confused with a spiritual awakening.  The next level up are the needs of safety.  Those which provide some moderate level of life sustaining elements.  In my opinion, someone who is trapped at this level would have a difficult time of accepting change.  They are so busy trying to survive in a hand to mouth cycle, that their is little time for much else.    The level, “Love and belonging” can stimulate a break from the stress of “just surviving”.  With the embrace of loving arms we begin to feel our strength as we emerge into a place where spiritual growth can occur.  We might begin by questioning our lives and wanting something move for our loved ones.  We have a lot to learn from this point, but an important milestone may be reached that starts us in the right direction.
